This engaging and informative lesson helps students to understand one of the key themes running throughout Robert Swindells’ Stone Cold: Homelessness. Students use key information, research skills, and extracts from the text to understand how and why homelessness happens and who it can affect, before composing their own arguments about how they believe homelessness should be tackled. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: - Considering their own views towards homeless people, and thinking about how these were formed; - Researching how and why people become homeless, and who it affects ; - Reading an extract from ‘Stone Cold’ in which Link describes a night on the streets, to better empathise with those who are sleeping rough; - Answering comprehension questions about the extract, considering the writer’s use of language and retrieving textual information to back up their ideas; - Forming their own arguments about how homelessness should be tackled, using their own research and the information gathered throughout the lesson; - Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts; Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; - Research Template; - Selected extracts - Stone Cold - Link’s description of a night on the streets; - Writing to Argue Helpsheet; - Comprehensive lesson plan. There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with a year 8 class, however colleagues have used them for between years 5 and 9 with minimal adaptations. The engaging and purposeful series of lessons has been designed to enable children to gain develop an in-depth understanding of Ancient Greece. There is a particular focus on the achievements of the Ancient Greeks and how these have influenced the world. Children are guided towards answering the enquiry question: ‘How have Ancient Greek achievements influenced the world?’ The lessons included are: Introduction to Ancient Greece Seafaring City-States Democracy and Law The Olympic Games Culture and Religion A Lasting Legacy In each lesson, the learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the step-by-step learning journey. Also included are all worksheets, templates and additional resources required to teach the lessons - everything needed to teach is included. In the past, I have used these lessons with children in lower KS2 (years 3 and 4), however this was an advanced class and these resources could easily be used with upper KS2. This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Lynne Cherry’s ‘The Great Kapok Tree.’ (Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions). They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS1 expectations within the National Curriculum framework - there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text. Activities within the booklet include: ‘Feed Jaguar!’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘talk about their favourite words and phrases in the story;’ ‘Cherry’s Description’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Explain meanings of words that they know and ask the meaning of new words. Link the meaning of new words to words that they already know;’ ‘The Blurb’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Say what might happen next in a story based on what has happened so far;’ ‘Story Mountain’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Enjoy reading and discussing the order of events in books and how items of information are related.’ Plus many, many more activities (the booklet is 20 pages in length). This engaging and detailed lesson aims to improve students’ understanding of the lead protagonist in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: Victor Frankenstein. The lesson places a particular focus upon how Victor fits the role of a tragic hero, and it studies the actions and behaviours that lead to his inevitable demise. Students also analyse how Shelley uses the character of Victor to present key messages about religion, unchecked ambition, and the treatment of the ‘others’ in society. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: - Defining the role of the tragic hero and exploring how Victor personifies these features; - Understanding prevailing attitudes towards religion, ambition, and appearances, and investigating how Victor would have been received considering these ideas; - Reading and understanding extracts in which Victor’s fatal flaws are evident, and considering how they are relevant; - Analysing how Shelley utilises Victor and his demise to present key messages to readers; - Linking knowledge of time, place, and author, and relating these to specific areas of the text; - Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and substantial; (including an animated Frankenstein’s monster to guide them through the lesson); - Mood map - to track Victor’s role in the plot and eventual destruction; - ‘Frankenstein’s Actions’ worksheet; - Analysis template with success criteria for creating well-structured responses; - Comprehensive lesson plan. There are also opportunities for group learning, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. This was originally taught to middle-ability year 10 groups, but can easily be differentiated for groups of different ages and abilities.
